Abstract

Objectives: To determine the effects of Group Reminiscence Therapy on later middle aged women.

Methods: The research was a mixed method design. The participants were selected randomly from women aged from 50 to 65 years of age in Geoje city. 57 women were recruited (29 in the experimental groups, 28 in the control group). The experimental group underwent 6 sessions of Group Reminiscence Therapy for 2 hours, once a week. The quantitative data were collected measuring self-esteem and depression. The qualitative data were collected through individual reminiscence diaries, conversations amongst the participants during Group Reminiscence Therapy, and researcher"s observation reviews. The quantitative data were analyzed homogeneity test, x©÷-test and independent t-test and the qualitative data were categorized by content analysis.

Results: After providing the Group Reminiscence Therapy, the scores of self-esteem in the experimental group were higher than those of the control group. Later middle aged women could be seen to have experienced 4 stages of responses during the Group Reminiscence Therapy which were; "exploring others, "opening their minds to others, "sympathizing with others, "finding themselves.

Conclusions : This study indicates that Group Reminiscence Therapy was an effective nursing intervention for later middle aged women"s psychosocial health promotion.
